The book’s lead character, Donovan Klass, was introduced in the series’ second book, The Cruiserweight’s Daughter, as Autumn Kerrigan’s childhood friend. In Klass Act, he’s in his mid-twenties and single father of a young daughter. Donovan also realized his longtime ambition of becoming a juvenile probation officer. Upon the reader’s initial impression, he appears content with his current career and sharing custody of his little girl with her mother.

When Donovan eventually sees both his best friend Marcus Tucker and his daughter’s mother achieve their respective successes in wrestling – and receives constant pressure from both his father, Peter Klass, and Brett Kerrigan to follow Peter’s footsteps into the ring – Donovan is faced with a tough decision whether or not to switch careers, and how doing such would affect the people for whom he cares the most.

Book Profile 3/11/13

LifeCode Do any of us have a concept on how real life is supposed to work? How do we deal with the toxic people in our lives? What about the “stinking thinking” some of us tend to have?

While I’m not big on self-help books, Life Code: The New Rules for Winning in the Real World by Dr. Phil McGraw (Bird Street Books, 2012) brings new wisdom and tips to toughen ourselves in order to both succeed and overcome obstacles in the current world.

Book Description (via Amazon):

In Life Code: The New Rules for Winning in the Real World, six-time New York Times #1 best-selling author Dr. Phil McGraw abandons traditional thinking and tells you the ugly truth about the users, abusers, and overall “bad guys” we all have in our lives. He also reveals the secrets of how they think and how they get to and exploit you and those you love. You’ll gain incredible insight into these negative people, which he refers to as BAITERs (Backstabbers, Abusers, Imposters, Takers, Exploiters, Reckless), and you’ll gain the tools to protect yourself from their assaults. Dr. Phil’s new book gives you the “Evil Eight” identifiers so you can see them coming from a mile away, as well as their “Secret Playbook,” which contains the “Nefarious 15” tactics they use to exploit you and take what is yours mentally, physically, socially and professionally. Life Code then focuses on you and your playbook, which contains the “Sweet 16” tactics for winning in the real world.

Edgy, controversial and sometimes irreverent, Dr. Phil again abandons convention to prepare you to claim what you deserve and claim it now. You take flying lessons to learn to fly, swimming lessons to learn to swim, and singing lessons to learn to sing. So, why not take winning lessons to learn to win?

New Book Profile 3/4/13

Are you excited for Lisa Scottoline’s upcoming release Don’t Go as I am?

The new book will be released April 9 by St. Martin’s Press in hardcover, Kindle, audiobook, and in large print.

Book Description (via Amazon):

Bestselling author Lisa Scottoline has thrilled millions with her emotionally-charged novels that feature strong women exploring the boundaries of family, justice, and love. In Don’t Go, she breaks new ground and delivers the story of a soldier who discovers what it means to be a man, a father, and ultimately, a hero.

When Dr. Mike Scanlon is called to serve as an army doctor in Afghanistan, he’s acutely aware of the dangers he’ll face and the hardships it will cause his wife Chloe and newborn baby. And deep inside, he doesn’t think of himself as a warrior, but a healer.

However, in an ironic turn of events, as Mike operates on a wounded soldier in a war-torn country, Chloe dies at home in the suburbs, in an apparent household accident. Devastated, he returns home to bury her, only to discover that the life he left behind has fallen apart. His medical practice is in jeopardy, and he is a complete stranger to the only family he has left – his precious baby girl. Worse, he learns a shocking secret that sends him into a downward spiral.

Ultimately, Mike realizes that the most important battle of his life faces him on the home front and he’ll have to put it all on the line to save what’s dearest to him – his family. Gripping, thrilling, and profoundly emotional, Don’t Go is Lisa Scottoline at her finest.
